Introduction

Visualization tools help people make sense of data by presenting information in two-dimensional or three-dimensional formats. Graphical displays make patterns more evident, particularly if the data can be displayed in multiple ways or in comparison to other data sets.

The LEAD portal currently provides access to the Integrated Data Viewer (IDV), developed and supported by Unidata, as a free tool for visualizing geoscience data in 3-D. The application will download to and run on your desktop computer. You can use the tool to view data sets that you have found through the LEAD portal or to view the output of experiments that you have conducted. You choose the data source and the variables you wish to display, then you can interactively adjust the images to reveal patterns and relationships.

For more detailed information on how to use this tool, see the IDV section linked above.
